Let’s take a look at what describes sensitive skin and essential 11 sensitive skin care

What is Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin actually is a skin concern or can say condition that can occur in people with any skin type, including dry, oily, combination or normal. Sensitive skin is characterized by tingling, prickling or burning sensations along with pain due to chemical, hormonal, physical or psychological factors.

  • The chemical factors involved harmful skin products ingredients, cosmetics, pollutants, shampoos or soaps.

  • The physical factors involved cold, heat, wind, UV radiations, dust or allergens.

  • The hormonal and psychological factors involved the menstrual cycle or stress, respectively.

You must be aware of these factors to know if you really are suffering from sensitivity. If you do, then you must take care of the following 11 points to keep your skin calm, soothing and healthy.

1. Always go for gentle face wash for sensitive skin

Cleansing the skin at least two times a day is one of the most essential and required rituals of skincare. People with sensitive skin need to choose a cleansing formula very carefully.

2. Ensure the products contain no harsh chemicals or fragrances

The other essential thing that needs to take care of while shopping is either a cleansing lotion or any other skin care product, make sure your cleansing lotion should not contain sulphates, paraben, mineral oil, imidazolidinyl urea, methylchloroisothiazolinone, formaldehyde, fragrances, or any other harsh chemicals. These chemicals or fragrances can trigger your skin and lead to redness, dryness or irritation.

3. Must shield your skin with sunscreen

Sensitive skin can also get aggravated under harmful sun rays. People can get sunburn, redness or even rosacea. It is very important for people with sensitivity to protect their skin from the sun. For this, a broad-spectrum sunscreen for sensitive skin is the must.

You can either go for physical or chemical, heavy-based or gel-based and more as per your skin type. But make sure you are applying sunscreen everyday, no matter if there are clouds or its very little sunshine outside, stick to the protocol.

4. Never forget to moisturize the skin

Select a suitable moisturizer and keep this in your essential kit. For dry and sensitive skin, choose oil or cream based which contain higher proportion of oil compared to water. It protects your skin from being dry, irritated, inflamed and itchy. For smooth skin, this step is important.

5. Don’t dye hair, if feel allergic to it

Hair colors or dyes can be allergic to sensitive skin. These may contain some ingredients like paraphenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause skin allergic reactions, including dry skin, burning of the skin or stinging sensations. This chemical is also present in printer ink, temporary tattoo ink and gasoline. This chemical actually gets partially oxidized and becomes harmful to the skin.

However, don’t compare the sensitive skin symptoms with hair dye allergy. If you are particularly allergic to hair dye then the symptoms might be different. Along with burning and stinging sensations, you might get blisters, swelling, swollen lips, hands or eyes and red rashes.

There is the case that people with sensitive skin will not get affected by dye but they should take caution while going for coloring.

6. Avoid taking hot showers

Hot water can burn the skin of sensitive people. They can get redness or inflammation by using hot or sometimes lukewarm water while taking a bath. Always go for normal water or lukewarm water up to the extent it doesn’t feel cold to you.

7. Select fabrics that don't irritate your skin

Fabrics including wool, bamboo, wrinkle-resistant and synthetic fibres like nylon or polyesters can give your skin the gift of itchiness. Your skin may get rashes also. People with sensitive skin should select soft texture clothes, including cotton and silk.

Other than this, also take care while washing the clothes. Some detergents can also cause rash or redness to your skin. These are some of the things people with sensitive skin should keep in mind while shopping for clothing.

Makeup can become your biggest enemy if you have sensitive skin. Many of the makeup products contain some ingredients which can harm your skin, give acne, dryness or itching. It is best if you do only minimal makeup, especially the base.

Choose a light-weight foundation or maximum medium base and only apply to the needed areas. Avoid doing too much layering as it can suffocate the skin, and this can cause adverse effects on the skin. Go for minimum and basic, give your skin full space to breathe and keep it healthy.

9. Don’t buy a single product without having patch test

It is a must whether you are choosing a skin care product or buying a cosmetic product, must do a patch test. It will help to know the product and its effect on your skin. This way you will not only protect your skin but also save money.
